As Ma-Yi embarked upon its 20th year, it was nearing completion of a capital campaign to establish an endowment. It had also recently increased its yearly number of main-stage productions from two to three. As the theater’s leaders approached this landmark anniversary, they reflected back on Ma-Yi’s legacy of developing and fostering new work by Asian American playwrights and considered what future path the relationship between the Writers Lab and the theater company should take. Both Ortoll and Ma-Yi’s artistic director, Ralph Peña (who is also a member of the Writers Lab), felt strongly that the work coming out of the Lab was of high caliber and wanted to see it produced across the country. Going forward, what would be the ideal relationship between the company and this growing program?

This case provides an opportunity to discuss the special challenges of a culturally specific theater, as well as plotting the trajectory of a small company in New York.
