For 42 years founders of Repertorio Español René Buch and Gilberto Zaldívar aspired to “introduce the best of Latin-American, Spanish, and Hispanic-American theatre in distinctive, quality productions, and to bring theatre to a broad audience in New York City and across the country, including seniors, students, and Hispanics of all national backgrounds.” In 2010, 85-year-old Buch was diagnosed with macular degeneration. Whereas Buch once directed many plays per season, he now directs only one, and Repertorio Español has been forced to answer the inevitable question: What will happen to the company after Buch steps down?

This case provides an opportunity to discuss succession planning in a culturally specific organization. The case video includes performance footage of Repertorio Español’s work and associated artists.
