As Artistic Director Robert Falls and Managing Director Roche Schulfer looked back on their 19 years leading Chicago’s Goodman Theatre together, they could take deep satisfaction. They had a rewarding partnership. The Theatre had a reputation for creating nationally important work, yet was proudly regarded as a hometown theatre by a city that saw itself as on a par with the world’s great cities.

The Goodman was exceptionally well funded and well attended, so the theatre had community support to serve the artists’ creative needs. The theatre had just completed a major fundraising campaign, which provided the resources to construct and inaugurate an outstanding new theater facility. The Goodman was thought to be one of the best-managed theater organizations in the United States, and the financial condition was strong. The only concern for Falls and Shulfer was how to maintain the theatre’s momentum into the future.
