In October 2015, The Old Globe received three-year funding of $1.725 million from The James Irvine Foundation. This funding through the Foundation’s New California Arts Fund (NCAF) initiative was aimed at moving arts engagement to the core of its partner-grantees. The NCAF grant had led directly to the creation of an Arts Engagement Department at The Old Globe, the recruitment of department head Freedome Bradley-Ballentine, the introduction of robust arts engagement programming, and an ambitious capacity building plan. However, the Foundation’s decision at the beginning of 2016 to end all its funding for the arts had put The Old Globe in a tricky situation. Although the theater managed to secure another $1.9 million through the same initiative which would last until October 2021, Barry Edelstein, Artistic Director of the theater, was concerned about the future of the Arts Engagement Department and of its programs.
