Since 1999, when Susie Farr, the Executive Director of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, took over leadership of the institution, she had seen turnover as the Center established itself and its distinctive process-focused presenting mission within the facility and the campus. But by 2005 this turnover began to appear less attributable to growing pains, and Farr feared that the Center was becoming something of a revolving door.

The Center had commissioned a study on its retention problems in 2005, and the creation of a new Director of Organizational Effectiveness was one response to the consultant’s findings. Now the challenge was to create a structure and environment that would allow them to stay healthy and plan for the future. Along the way they needed to be better able to measure and communicate their success, reach the community as well as the campus, and take their leadership team to the next level.

This case includes a video with interview footage of Executive Director Susie Farr, Ruth Waalkes, Director of Cultural Participation, Brian Jose, Director of Marketing, James F. Harris, Dean School of Arts & Humanities, Heidi Onkst, Director of Development, Robert Miller, Director of Finance & Administration, Drayton Foltz, Director of Production & Technology.
